Dynamic Repatterning Of The Deepest Elements of Your Experiencing

As explained in the Introduction section, DEPTH Dialogue extends and generalizes the principle of Dynamic Pattern Transcendence discovered in the bodywork disciplines to the whole of human experiencing. The practice of this can be explained as having five essential components:

1. Connecting: Transcendent Love Leads The Way.
2. Lengthening: Opening Up Your Experiencing.
3. Broadening: Spreading Out Your Experiencing.
4. Articulating: Differentiating Into Flexibility.
5. Dissolving: Decomposing Rigid Structures.

Each of these components is necessary for a practice to be operating with the principle of Dynamic Pattern Transcendence, which is the highest principle of the repatterning disciplines. In the sections on each component it will be shown how each contributes to the workings of the general principle, with examples from the somatic disciplines and then extended and generalized as DEPTH Dialogue practice.

These are just components, and no effort is made here to show how they fit together. That is the art of dynamic repatterning, and will be shown in the Advanced section.

Where DEPTH Dialogue Fits In Relation To Other Repatterning Practices

Repatterning practices can be classified according to what level of experience they address and what general principle governs their activities. The following chart is a schema of that classification, showing where DEPTH Dialogue stands in relation to other repatterning disciplines:

The Essential Practical Principles of Experiential Repatterning

DEPTH Dialogue operates through the highest principle of the most subtle and effective forms of experiential repatterning, namely, the principle of Dynamic Pattern Transcendence. This principle states that, given the right conditions, any natural system will spontaneously move into entirely new patterns of more fluidity, freer functioning and greater range of possibilities.

The practical application of this principle depends on subordinate practical principles which allow for the creation of the "right conditions" part of the equation. There are five such general principles. They are what make Dynamic Pattern Transcendence work.

They are, in a practical sense, what makes the activities of experiential repatterning unique and uniquely different from the actions of other kinds of practices. They operate in all five of the essential components of repatterning that are elucidated in the rest of this section on Basics.

These principles are:

1. Ecstasy Transcendence
2. Direct Experiencing
3. Indirect Action
4. The Power Of Gentleness
5. Differentiation
6. Spontaneous Generalization

1. Ecstasy Transcendence

Expansive pleasurable experience eases you into a transcendence of old patterns that makes your experiencing more relaxed, flowing and dynamic.

This principle is most notable in the repatterning methods such as Trager bodywork that make use of not just normal experiential repatterning but the higher level Dynamic Pattern Transcendence.

In DEPTH Dialogue, using the higher repatterning principle of Dynamic Pattern Transcendence, expansive experiencing is extended beyond what it is in the repatterning disciplines. It is not just transcendence of the current pattern. It is Ecstasy Transcendence through love-pleasure - this resulting in the supreme transcendent qualities and emotions (pure truth, beauty, goodness, etc.) that "trump" the lower-level negative and painful emotions.

(See Emotional Transcendence in the Introduction section and Connecting in this section for more detailed explanations of this.)

(More on this to be added soon)

1.a.  Ecstasy Transcendence leads the way.

This means that it eases the way for all the other repatterning principles to work better.

In practice, this means that having expansive pleasurable experiences is the first thing that you pay attention to. It is what you look to get to first, and it is what you keep coming back to.

2. Direct Experiencing

When you approach all you experiences by directily experiencing them within your own feeling sense of self (i.e. in your body) rather than treating them like they were external objects - analyzing them, diagnosing them or treating them as problems, conditions, or "issues" -  then those experiences more naturally and easily come to open up and spread out into your overall flow of experiencing, thereby flowing more easily themselves. They change without effort to make them change and at the same time get more integrated into your whole feeling sense of self.

Direct experiencing means bodily experiencing, i.e. the bodily sensations in the experience you are focusing on, or the bodily sensations of the feelings in your experience. As explained in the previous section on Focusing, your direct experience of bodily sensations is where deep fundamental change takes place through natural biofeedback without instruments.

3. Indirect Action

Relaxing, comfortable, indirect actions which gently ease you out of old patterns, inviting a flow into spontaneous new actions, work much better than goal-oriented actions or actions that oppose other actions.

This approach not only works better but it also skirts the pain and discomfort that can cause closing-down types of reactions (sometimes mistakenly called "resistances" and "defenses.")

3.a. (This follows from #'s 1 and 3): Focusing into pleasurable experiences works much better than going into pain or painful experiences.

4. The Power Of Gentleness

At the formative pattern level gentleness and subtlety work best, but force and intensity don't work and may even be harmful.

(to be added soon)

5. Differentiation

Fine differentiation of the elements of experiencing spontaneously leads to greater fluidity and flexibility in your experiencing.

This has been mentioned elsewhere as the practical corollary of the principle of Dynamic Pattern Transcendence. It states that fine discrimination in the process of direct bodily felt-experiencing spontaneously results in dynamic pattern transcendence.

In the practice of experiential repatterning this means that:

1. the primary focus of attention is always the process of immediate experiencing,

2. immediate experiencing is always non-representational experiencing (i.e. no thoughts, images, memories, insights, impressions, etc.),

3. the only experiencing that we have that is non-representational is direct inner bodily sensate experiencing (i.e. proprioception),

4. bodily sensate experiencing can be differentiated into finer and finer details through the application of more and more discrimination in the focus of attention, and

5. it is this fine discrimination in the focus of attention on bodily sensate experiencing that spontaneously results in Dynamic Pattern Transcendence.

More simply put, this means that all experiential repatterning works by focusing attention on the direct inner bodily sense of experiences, and then extending that attention by finding more details of that bodily sense. Even if a particular repatterning practice works with other elements of experience, such as thoughts, images or emotions, it always references direct bodily experiencing as its most basic action. (This is not always explicit in any given repatterning practice, but it is always operative.)

Fine discrimination in direct bodily sensing spontaneously leads to experiential creative breakthroughs. This is because it spreads out, opens up, loosens up and articulates experiences into more fluidity, freer movement and greater range of movement. Thus, this principle is an essential feature of every component of repatterning discussed in the other subsections of this section on Basics: Connecting, Lengthening, Broadening, Articulating and Dissolving.

Just bringing fine discrimination into direct experiencing makes creative breakthroughs in that experiencing inevitable because you are thereby disrupting any pattern of fixity that might exist in that experiencing. When a fixed pattern is disrupted, a new pattern must come in, something new must shape up to take its place. This happens by the spontaneous organizing action of nature. It doesn't have to be directed, forced or planned, and in repatterning it isn't because of the recognition and use of this principle.

6. Spontaneous Generalization

<>Repatterning in one area or level of experiencing spontaneously generalizes to other areas and levels.

(This is useful to know for all experiences, but it is especially important in dealing with painful experiences.

Because repatterning spontaneously generalizes, it is always completely unecessary to go into painful experiences. The repatterning into newness that takes place through gentle, pleasurable indirect actions spontaneously spreads to the painful experiences without your ever going directly into those painful experiences.)
